Retaining walls hold back the earth and prevent the natural process of erosion. They prevent soil from being washed away or from accumulating around your property. Retaining walls can also be used for their aesthetic properties.

Building the Foundation
Our Retaining Wall installers draw a string at the location of the front of the projected wall. Then we will mark the ground line with spray paint. Next we will move the string and dig a trench 24 inches wide, with 20 inches behind the string and 4 inches in front.
The excavation must be deep enough to hold the foundation. We will create a trench of 6 inches. An additional 10% of the total height of the wall has to be under ground. If you have a wall of 32 inches high, the depth of its foundation would be 6 inches. We will add 10% of the total height which is 3 inches. For a wall of 32 inches high the total depth of the excavation would be 9 inches. Our Retaining Wall installers the geotextile in the back as well as at the bottom of the trench in order to prevent contamination of the foundation and the drainage system. We will leave enough geotextile on the ground at the back of the wall to fold over the clean stone once the backfilling is completed. Then we will prepare a 6 inch or 15 cm foundation in two layers of 3 inches, using 0-3/4 inch stone and compact each layer with a jumping jack or a vibrating plate.
Installing the Wall
The Celtik Wall System offers three different configurations; the 90mm (3.5 inches) high module, the 135mm (5.3 inches) high module or a combination of the two.
Our Retaining Wall installers draw a string at the projected front wall level. Then they spread a thin layer of screening to provide a laying bed.
Our installers level each block with screening. The first row of blocks must be perfectly straight and level. From the second row of blocks and on they start using the anchor pins. The longest blocks require two pins the others only one.
- The modules are placed bottom up on the pallet to accelerate installation.
Next they insert pins in the modules, using the appropriate round slot, depending on whether the wall is to be vertical or sloped 8 degrees.
For the installation of the vertical wall they insert the pins in the round slot closest to the side.
- The Celtik Wall is easier to install than natural stone and does not require any mortar. Its top and bottom surfaces are flat to ensure easy, solid and stable stacking.
- Our installers carefully distribute different sizes of blocks to give a balanced natural look to the layout.
- Note that the maximum height of a vertical wall is 21 inches or 55 cm.
When building a wall to the maximum height of 42 inches, our Retaining Wall installers have to insert the pins in the round slot closest to the middle of the blocks. This way the wall will be sloped 8 degrees and reach a maximum height of 42 inches.
We will use 0 to 3/4 inch stones and place them behind the wall in a slope so that the water will evaporate and not accumulate behind the wall. We will then start back-building to provide proper support as soon as a height of 24 inches. Lastly, we will fold the geotextile over the drainage system.
